Leonard Magawa, B.D., LL.B (Hons)., LL.M

Leonard holds a Master of Laws from the University of Alberta, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Dar es Salaam, and a Bachelor of Divinity from Tumaini University. He also pursued theology at the University of Copenhagen, earning his certification in 1996.

Leonard maintains a broad and dynamic practice, with a strong focus on family law, including divorce, child welfare, family protection, and division of family property. He also represents clients in immigration hearings, real estate transactions, and wills and estates matters and has significant experience advocating for children in court. Known for his confident courtroom presence, Leonard has appeared before the Alberta Court of Justice, the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, the Alberta Court of Appeal, and various administrative tribunals. He holds membership in the Law Society of Alberta, the Law Society of Saskatchewan, and the Law Society of the Northwest Territories.

Beyond his practice, Leonard is deeply committed to mentorship and community engagement. He supervises and mentors articling students, young lawyers, and law students through initiatives such as the Business Venture Clinic in Calgary and the Calgary Region Immigrant Employment Council. Leonard’s career spans both Alberta and Saskatchewan and includes academic contributions as a sessional lecturer in contract law at Keyano College. Earlier in his career, he served as a tutorial assistant at the Institute of Judicial Administration in Tanzania. He is also a published legal scholar, with work featured in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and legal texts.

As a dedicated community leader, Leonard volunteers as a board member with several legal and community organizations across Alberta, reflecting his commitment to service and empowerment. Outside the office, he enjoys spending time with his family and staying active through badminton, soccer, and bowling.
